The "Dose" Question

To the Editor.
In our recent report of the collaborative trial of dexamethasone therapy for chronic neonatal lung disease1 we quoted a dosage schedule for dexamethasone of 0.6 mg/kg/d and omitted stating that the product used (Decadron, Merck, Sharp & Dohme) is supplied as dexamethasone sodium phosphate. After allowing for the sodium and phosphate, this is equivalent to a dose of 0.5 mg/Kg/d dexamethasone base.
Mammel and colleagues2 in the first published report of a controlled trial of dexamethasone for chronic neonatal lung disease, stated that they gave dexamethasone in a dose of 0.5 mg/kg/d.
