The evaluation of vesicular genital rashes can be challenging for the pediatrician. The presence of an unusual genital rash should raise the concern of sexual abuse. In recent years awareness of child sexual abuse and its various presentations has increased through both lay and medical literature. When the possibility of sexual abuse arises, historical data may be difficult to elicit and can be misleading. The decision to investigate further may be based on the clinical appearance and location of the rash and the physician's level of suspicion.
In this setting, the differential diagnosis of genital rashes in children assumes tremendous importance.
