Physicians' Interactions with Pharmaceutical Companies

LAWRENCE PROCOPIO MD1

1 5320 Trask Street, Oakland, California 94601

To the Editor.—

I was pleased to see Dr Margolis' article1 on the ethics of physician interactions with pharmaceutical companies that appeared in the December 1991 issue of Pediatrics. I applaud the author for making such a clear statement of his opinion. It is not often easy for physicians to escape the conflicts of interest which are, I believe, inherent in our fee-for-service system.

For my part, I often have conflicting thoughts about the ethics of accepting samples of medication from pharmaceutical company representatives.
