HELEN M. WALLACE M.D.1, MARGARET A. LOSTY R.N.1, and LEONA BAUMGARTNER M.D.1

1 The Maternity and Newborn Division, New York City Department of Health, New York City.

This report has presented some facts about premature infants based on a two year experience in the transportation of 1,209 small prematurely born infants to special "premature centers" in New York City. The data point the way for further developments in a program of care for the premature infant and in the prevention of premature labor. The importance of the parallel development of a sound maternity program and a special program to care for the prematurely born infant is emphasized.
