Wilderness Medicine for Children

Douglas A. Gentile MD1 and Barbara C. Kennedy MD1

1 The Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee

Wilderness travel with children requires special preparation and places extra demands on parents. However, it also affords unique opportunities. Parents and children interact in a setting distant from the stresses of work and school. Isolated from the distractions of television and modern life, children experience new environments and participate in activities that enrich their lives and often provide valuable lessons. Physicians can encourage and facilitate such activities by providing guidelines and recommendations for wilderness safety. In the wilderness as with general health care, prevention provides the best means of coping with potential difficulties.
