In Reply: Boomerang Effect of Drug Education Programs

The concern expressed by Dr Miele is not isolated to this study. As stated under "Discussion," drug education interventions "may even have a boomerang effect and actually encourage use." We previously have commented on this paradoxical effect and are critical of those who foster the notion that focusing on anabolic steroids' untoward effects would be an effective way of curbing abuse. Others have acknowledged the phenomenon of adolescents' increased desire to use illicit substances after interventions to prevent drug abuse.
