Sucrose as an Analgesic for Newborn Infants

ERIKA BRUCK MD1

1 Children's Hospital of Buffalo, 219 Bryant Street, Buffalo, New York 14222

The very convincing and scientific article by Blass and Hoffmeyer' reminds me of one of my earliest recollections as a medical student. In 1930, in my first clinical semester, I audited a course in surgery given by Professor Ferdinand Sauerbruch, a brilliant and world-renowned surgeon—eccentric, dramatic, and not known for compassion with either patients or students. The lecture was given in a large amphitheater at the Charité (University Hospital) in Berlin; the subject was pylorormyotomy.
