The hypothesis being tested was that increased HbF synthesis which is an erythropoietic response to hypoxemia could occur in infants with BPD. Hypoxemia as a result of anemia should result in the same phenomena. Dr Koeller is correct in noting that newborn infants requiring intensive care have frequent blood sampling; however, because intensive care also includes maintaining physiological blood volume and hematocrit, anemia was not a factor for the increased production of HbF reported in this study.
