To the Editor.—

A recent increase in phenytoin (PHT) toxicity in children prompted us to investigate prescribing practices of pediatricians in Long Island, NY. Questionnaires, consisting of 18 questions regarding the use, kinetics, and side effects of PHT, were sent to 603 pediatricians. There were 97 respondents (16%). Of the respondents, 29% originally prescribed PHT themselves (n = 76 = number who responded to question). The mean number of children treated per month was 2.3 (range 1 to 12).
