History and physical examination alone should be sufficient to establish the diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in 90% of cases. The diagnosis probably is not done so accurately when an experienced pediatrician and a pediatric surgeon are not participating in the evaluation.
The availability of studies such as ultrasonography and upper gastrointestinal tract series provide alternatives that are used immediately, notwithstanding their known possible adverse side effects, especially the upper gastrointestinal tract series.
