In our opinion, the nonsterility of the normal maxillary sinuses has not been resolved completely, in part because of the obvious difficulties in performing maxillary sinus punctures in healthy individuals. We have recovered high titers of bacteria in sinus aspirates of 28.6% of our patients with normal maxillary sinus x-rays. However, all the children in our study had chronic tonsillitis and/or adenoids enlargement, and therefore our results only apply to children with those underlying conditions.
