Routine Cholesterol Surveillance in Childhood

WILLIAM FELDMAN MD, FRCPC1

1 Ambulatory Care Services, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, 401 Smyth, Ottawa, Ontario K1H 8L1, Canada

To the Editor.—

The article by Garcia and Moodie1 on cholesterol screening in childhood is likely to receive considerable attention and may have an impact on pediatric practice. The observation of these authors that the usual high-risk family characteristics may, if used as sole criteria for screening, allow some hypercholesterolemic children to remain undetected is valid. However, their recommedation that "all children older than 3 years of age should have a cholesterol test" cannot go unchallenged.
