Inadequate Breast Feeding and Jaundice

To the Editor.—

The article by Kemper et al1 is thought-provoking and timely.

One method of avoiding interruption of breast-feeding when a neonate is jaundiced holds promise for reducing the frequency of untimely termination of lactation. As reported in an earlier publication,2 a series of 20 mothers whose infants had bilirubin levels greater than 12 mg/dL used a Medela Supplemental Nutrition System (SNS) to provide additional milk to the infant before discharge from the hospital.
