The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that two million to three million Americans abused cocaine in 1985. . .[A current] estimate is that at least three million Americans abuse the drug, and 40 percent of them use crack, the powerfully addictive, smokable form of cocaine.
"There has been a major decrease in use among the affluent and educated and a substantial increase in use by the young, poor and uneducated," [an expert said].
