[National Perinatal Information Center] survey figures reveal . . . there are about 2,021 neonatologists practising or between 37 percent and 60 percent too many subspecialty physicians in the field [U.S.]. . . . Between 1983 and 1985, births increased by 3.2 percent from 3,639,999 to 3,757,000. Nonetheless, the numbers of reported neonatal intensive care beds rose by 15.5 percent. . . . The analyses on manpower and beds point toward a system with excess capacity.
