In 1927, the story goes, a Detroit secretary burst excitedly into her boss's office and cried, "Mr. Smith! A man has just flown across the Atlantic all by himself!" Smith engrossed in reports did not respond.

She tried again: "Mr. Smith, you don't understand—all by himself a man has flown the Atlantic!" This time he looked up. "All by himself a man can do anything," he said, "When a committee flies the Atlantic, let me know."
