POOR KIDS
With the increasing number of single-parent households, children have come to have the highest poverty rate in the nation. In the mid-l960s, poverty among children was no worse than for the population as a whole; today, one child out of four is poor, and children are 50 percent more likely to be living in poverty (defined by the Government as an income of $11,204 or less for a family of four) than is the population as a whole.
