Haemophilus influenzae Type b Vaccine

Pediatricians are being urged to drop Haemophilus influenzae type b polysaccharide (PRP) vaccine in favor of conjugate vaccine PRP-D ("ProHIBit," Connaught Laboratories), which is advertised as "the only [H influenzae] vaccine you need" for children 18 to 60 months of age. We acknowledge that PRP-D induces a higher peak antibody response than PRP in this age range (although some published data supporting this point compared PRP-D to PRP heat-treated to eliminate high molecular weight components and is unlikely to pass FDA specifications).
