The authors of a recent article1 examined the hymenal anatomy in 1,131 newborn infants without major anomalies of the urogenital tract. Congenital absence of the hymen was not observed in this study, and its frequency was Calculated to be 0.00265 or less than 0.3%. They concluded that the lowest estimation of the frequency of this genital anomaly would be essentially zero.
As part of our monitoring system to determine the incidence of congenital malformations in our newborn population, we examined2 25,068 female newborns between 1974 and 1987.
