Rivara et al (Pediatrics 1987;80:579-584) suggest that children without positive clinical findings following head trauma may still be at substantial risk for brain injury. In the abstract of their article, they state, "No clinical findings, alone or in combination, accurately identified all patients with abnormal findings on CT scan."(p579) In particular, the authors noted that, of 51 patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale of 13 to 15, 16 (31%) had abnormal CT findings.
