To the Editor.
We would like to point out an inaccuracy in the commentary written by Dr Cairo1 in which he states that the three different groups in our study "should have required separate randomizations." In fact, the groups were not mixed. They were separately randomized and analyzed. Only after they were considered separately and no differences were found in outcome were the three groups combined for a total population.
Also, although the average age of presentation was older than that in the studies by either Christensen et al2 or Cairo et al,3 we only included children with over-whelming sepsis, those who were in shock and who required mechanical ventilation.
