Repeat Throat Cultures?

To the Editor.—

Dr Wald and colleagues1 in their recent article concerning an outbreak of acute rheumatic fever stress that diligence is essential in the approach to diagnosis and therapy of streptococcal infections. Although many learned authorities2 believe that repeat throat cultures are not indicated after completion of a ten-day course of antibiotic therapy for group A streptococcal pharyngitis, some physicians are routinely performing these follow-up throat cultures. Are such repeat throat cultures now necessary in view of the article by Dr Wald et al?
