SIDS or Murder?

DOROTHY H. KELLY MD1

Dr DiMaio correctly points out that, unfortunately, the cause of SIDS is not known and may be multiple. Since the five deaths reported in our recent paper1 occurred in families in which at least two previous siblings had died, he believes that the mothers probably killed these infants. Naturally, in every case of death, this cause must be carefully investigated and more so in families with more than one unexplained death, especially when that death occurs in a helpless infant.
