The observations of Dr Embree et al are indeed iteresting. The fact that axillary lymph nodes were palpable in 27.7% of infants in their survey is noteworthy. In our study, axillary nodes were found in 1% of neonates 0 to 72 hours of age. The discrepancy may be due to differences in environmental or genetic factors of the two groups (different ethnic groups examined). Infants with positive serologic tests for syphilis were excluded from our study population.
