Health Assessment and Screening During Adolescence

RICHARD H. SCHWARTZ MD1

1 410 Maple AVe, West, Vienna, VA 22180

To the Editor.—

In the July 1987 supplement to Pediatrics, Drs Marks and Fisher1 suggest using a liver enzyme screen such as ggr-glutamyl transpeptidase to detect alcohol-induced liver damage in the adolescent patient. I question the wisdom of this recommendation on two grounds. First, to my knowledge, there are no published reports concerning the accuracy and sensitivity of such a test in the adolescent patient. Evidence from my own experience, moreover, refutes the recommendation of Drs Marks and Fisher.
