Homosexual Adolescents and Confidentiality
1 Department of Pediatrics, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT 06510-8064
To the Editor.
In two sensitive and informative articles,1,2 Dr Remafedi reported adolescent homosexuals' experiences and perspectives and described potential medical and psychosocial difficulties related to their sexuality. Because of his obvious intention to protect his subjects' welfare, I would like to comment on an apparent inconsistency in his consent procedures. He describes participation in the studies as "voluntary, anonymous, and confidential" and states that a "code number was assigned to each subject, and no additional identifying information was requested."
