In Reply.—

Dr Cantani raises several important points regarding AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children. The incubation period for Centers for Disease Control-defined AIDS in both children and adults varies considerably. Some HIV-infected children reported to the Centers for Disease Control have met the case definition for AIDS as early as 1 month of age; others have been older than 7 years of age when their HIV-related illnesses were diagnosed as AIDS.
