Early and Periodic Screening; Diagnosis, and Treatment Program

WILLIAM K. FRANKENBURG MD, MSPH1

1 Departments of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine/Biometrics, Denver

To the Editor.—

In a previous issue of Pediatrics, Meisels and Margolis1 describe Michigan's former Early and periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) program. They point out a number of problems in the program, including what they perceive as the failure of the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) to identify young children with developmental delays. They recommend "replacement of the DDST" in EPSDT programs. It is unfortunate that they have chosen to blame the test for what were in reality programmatic problems.
