Nerds Cereal and Red Stools
1 Department of Pediatrics, Children's Medical Center, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22908
To the Editor.
Bright red stools are an alarming sign at any age. In a previously well child, such stool can produce marked anxiety in both patient and parent. We are writing to report a case of such stools following the ingestion of the cereal "Nerds."
A 5-year-old boy was brought to the pediatric night clinic at the Children's Medical Center of the University of Virginia, with the chief complaint of blood in stool. About one hour prior to arrival in the clinic, he passed a bright red-orange stool.
