Dr. Silverio, of course, is correct. In our recent paper,1 we do not mention the possibility that formation of lactobezoars may be more common in low birth weight infants fed casein-predominant formulas. In 1982, Schreiner et al2 reported that the incidence of lactobezoar formation in low birth weight infants (<2,000 g) was 6.6% during a 2frac12-year period when casein-predominant formulas were fed exclusively, whereas the incidence during a subsequent time interval when whey-predominant formulas were fed exclusively was 0%.
