To the Editor.
Maisels and Gifford (Pediatrics 1986;78:837-843) state that "many pediatricians who have practiced for more than 25 years are convinced that they now see far more neonatal jaundice than was seen two or three decades ago." As a veteran of a quarter of a century of pediatrics practice, I am not sure this is so. What brings the problem to everyone's attention is directly related to the shorter period of hospitalization for today's healthy newborns.
