SREEDHAR P. RAO MD1 and SCOTT T. MILLER MD1

1 Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn, 450 Clarkson Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11203

To the Editor.—

We read with interest the report by Syrogiannopoulos et al.1 The authors have reported six cases of isolated septic arthritis and eight cases of osteomyelitis, two with septic arthritis, in children with sickle cell disease. Whereas Salmonella was the commonest cause of osteomyelitis, Streptococcus pneumoniae was the commonest cause of septic arthritis. This appears to be the first report describing several cases of isolated septic arthritis in children with sickle cell disease.
