A polysaccharide vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b was licensed in April 1985. Both the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices1 (ACIP) of the Public Health Service and the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics2 have recommended that all children between 24 and 60 months of age receive this vaccine. In addition, the ACIP has recommended that children who are at increased risk of infection (such as those who attend group day care) receive the vaccine at 18 months of age.1 There is little information about how extensively these recommendations have been implemented. To address this issue, we determined the prevalence of immunization among a sample of children from the New Haven, Connecticut, area.
