This paper presents a review of enuresis from an historical aspect. It begins with a discussion of the treatment of the enuretic problem in primitive civilizations and carries its colorful history through to the close of the 19th century. There follows a short discussion of the modern psychologic theories concerning its etiology. In conclusion there is reemphasis of the statement that enuresis is a symptom, not a disease, and as such it is only by greater understanding of the individual underlying pathology that enuresis can be successfully treated.
