Response to Edwards and Johnson: From a statistical perspective, we are aware of the potential risk of false-negative results based on a straight forward power analysis of the data we presented. However, due to the number of known, and perhaps greater number of unknown, variables, the level of complexity, and the diversity of clinical approaches to the medical problems in critically ill neonates, we sought to execute our protocol during an 8-month period of "stable staffing and management approaches."
