Drs Wiswell, Smith, and Bass (Pediatrics 1985;75:901-903) report an association between circumcision and decreased frequency of urinary tract infection in infancy. This report has all the makings of a pediatric cause celebre, perhaps overshadowing the significance or lack of same of this study. They indicate that their latest study includes a series of infants, 92% of whom were cultured by bladder tap, with the same observed difference in frequency of urinary tract infection between the circumcised and noncircumcised.
