Home Phototherapy Recommendations Questioned

RONALD L. POLAND MD, FAAP1

1 Chairman, Committee on Fetus and Newborn, American Academy of Pediatrics

Dr Grabert provides me with an opportunity to relate some of the process that the Committee on Fetus and Newborn went through in constructing the statement on home phototherapy. Most statements start with the request of a practicing pediatrician who wants guidelines for a problem that is not well-defined in available texts and articles. In this case, guidelines were being sought for a procedure that had the potential of saving a substantial part of the costs of hospitalization or rehospitalization of neonates just for phototherapy.
