Home Phototherapy Recommendations Questioned

BRIAN E. GRABERT MD1

To the Editor.—

The report and recommendations for home phototherapy, as reported by the Committee on the Fetus and Newborn (Pediatrics 1985;76:136-137), was well intentioned but in my opinion hastily conceived and fell far short of expectations. Just when the pediatric community was convinced that the bilirubin/kernicterus issue was "a real mess,"1 this committee seemingly attempts to provide order where chaos has reigned.

I am concerned about the lack of referencing of available data2,3 on home phototherapy, albeit limited, in the committee's report.
