Seat Belt Injury Masquerading as Sexual Abuse

ROBERT B. BAKER MD1

1 Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 1601 Tilton Rd Northfield, NJ 08225

A 5 7/12-year-old girl was referred to my office by the state police because of suspicion of sexual abuse. She had been traveling in the back seat of her father's car late at night when the auto was struck by another oncoming vehicle. The mother was not present because the parents were separated and the father had weekend custody. The girl had been sleeping in a supine position and was restrained by a standard seat belt. She was not supported by any other device.
