Pediatrics and the Malpractice Crisis

To the Editor.—

Pediatricians, like all physicians, are increasingly becoming targets of malpractice suits. Pediatricians, however, are likely to find themselves at special risk. In most states, the statute of limitations allows 2 years for discovery procedures. An infant plaintiff has an added allowance simply because of youth. In effect, a case may be allowed to brew for 21 years before the attorney considers it ripe.

Deferring a medicolegal attack is good strategy. Medical standards and procedures change.
