Misleading Editorial

To the Editor.—

The commentary, "The Attack on the Tympanic Membrane,"1 "calls for some comments as the author referred to a preliminary report of my study.2

Stickler1 suggests that we "demand prospective studies of untested surgical procedures before our patients are subjected to them," and nobody can disagree with that. However, the aim of such investigations is to arrive at a scientific analysis that is based on a weighing of the pros and cons. This process is going on concerning the use of ventilation tubes in secretory otitis media and, if a status has to be made, both types of information should be evaluated.
