Stop Home Phototherapy

WILLIAM R. DELOACHE MD1

1 Greenville Hospital System, 701 Grove Rd, Greenville, SC 29605

To the Editor.—

A recent communication from a manufacturer of phototherapy devices sought the opinion of pediatricians regarding home use of phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia. My reply to the company was in strong opposition to this proposal. I am concerned that this manufacturer and others may advertise and promote home use of a form of therapy that is even now often prescribed in spite of inadequate knowledge with regard to indications, poor understanding of how or whether therapy is effective, and unfounded assumptions regarding safety.
