Lucey and Dangman1 showed why a multifactorial explanation of the retinopathy of prematurity seems likely. However, data on the actual role of oxygen, in carefully matched groups, are still lacking. Our survey may contribute to this investigation.
The results of a biomicroscopic investigation of the retina were assessed in two groups of prematurely born children who weighed less than 1,500 g at birth. A Goldman's contact glass made it possible to observe the especially at risk peripheral retina.
