Care of Infants with Myelomeningocele

To the Editor.—

In the article by Gross et al1, the topic of infection was not addressed. In two of the references that they cited, there was a 60% greater incidence of meningitis or ventriculitis in the groups with delayed closure compared with the groups with immediate closure. The numbers in the Smyth et al article2 are 8/53 (15%) infected in the group with immediate closure and 11/46 (24%) in the group with delayed closure. In the Sharrard et al study3 the numbers are 5/20 (25%) infected in the group with immediate closure and 8/20 (40%) in the group with delayed closure.
