To the Editor.
The Armstrong X-4 model 500 baby incubator (Fig 1) has been a fixture in newborn nurseries in North America since its introduction in 1948. A survey of hospitals in northern Connecticut revealed that 12 of 17 nurseries are currently using the original X-4 incubator or its more recent version, the X-P, model 22 baby incubator, still in production (Ohio Medical Products). Incubators manufactured up to and including 1974, contained an asbestos gasket around the outer rim of the incubator top upon which the lid of the warmer closes.
