To the Editor.
Bergen and Kalishman1 concluded their article, "Floor Furnace Burns to Children," with suggestions for prevention. As our pediatric practice is in an area with old homes that have these hazardous furnaces, we have for many years recommended a simply made wooden grid which fits over the furnace outlet. An adult or older child can step over it as it is only about eight inches high. If made according to the instruction sheet (Figure), it will withstand prolonged use without danger of charring or burning, replacing the danger of burned extremities with the annoyance of stubbed toes.
