Editor's Note:

A Commentary represents an individual's opinion. Commentaries are often controversial. They are not AAP policy statements. No matter how often this is pointed out some individuals persist in condemning or threatening the Editor and the AAP when we publish commentaries that are contrary to their views. Some individuals seem to believe that the journal should not print views that differ from their own. The AAP's official position on life-sustaining treatment for seriously ill newborns was stated in the October 1983 issue of Pediatrics.
