Adolescent Chest Pain

ROBERT T. BROWN MD1

1 Section of Adolescent Medicine, Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH 43205

To the Editor.—

The study by Pantell and Goodman1 on adolescent chest pain was most interesting and informative. I have a question, however, about their statement that their criteria for diagnosis of costochondritis were more restrictive than were mine in my previous study. 2 On the contrary, our criteria for the diagnosis of costochondritis were exactly the same: pain that is reproducible by palpating the affected rib cartilage when no other signs or symptoms are present. There are other reasons possible for the discrepancy between the prevalence of costochondritis in our two reports.
