To the Editor.
The article by Bennett et al1 is one of several recent reports2,3 presenting outcome data on very low-birth-weight infants. These reports address the question: what is the lowest birth weight that justifies resuscitation and intensive care? Perinatal and obstetrical management decisions relating to the outcome of infants weighing less than 800 g are so numerous that the relevant question should be: at what gestational age will the perinatal team provide intensive management of the maternal-fetal unit?
