Icosaphobia

WILLIAM E. HART MD1

1 Department of Pediatrics, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, 114 Woodland St, Hartford, CT 06105

To the Editor.—

In coining a new word, one should attempt to maintain consistency in the use of the root language. Thus eikosaphobia, or icosaphobia, from the Greek: eikosi (twenty), is preferable to vigintiphobia1 since the latter is a hybrid. That a hybrid is established in common usage, eg, claustrophobia, does not justify a repetition.
